Team Running for Cover: Meet Adam and Lindsay Forrest

adam and lindsay forrest

The 114th Boston Marathon commences on Monday, April 16th, and IMPACT Melanoma is once again proud to present our team, Running for Cover, which is comprised of a dedicated group of runners that come from different backgrounds and levels of running experience. Each of our runners share a passion for our cause – which is to spread awareness and prevention initiatives with regard to the incidences of melanoma around the United States, and, with our lead, the word.

Many of Running for Cover’s team members are survivors, family members of survivors, or a person who has lost a loved one to melanoma. Together, along with our partnership with the Boston Athletic Association, we’ve been able to make great IMPACT over the years raising in excess of $1.9 million, which has gone to directly benefit IMPACT Melanoma’s mission of prevention, education, support and advocacy in the fight against melanoma.

As mentioned, each of our team members have unique reasons as to why they’re contributing efforts to Running for Cover, and, as such, we’re highlighting a handful of them in support of their run, and their campaign to raise necessary funds.

With that in mind, please join us in welcoming and thanking, Adam and Lindsay Forrest!

IMPACT Melanoma: How’d you learn about IMPACT Melanoma and Team Running for Cover?

Lindsay Forrest: Adam’s cousin Meghan was diagnosed with Melanoma a few years ago.  Since that diagnosis and recovery Meghan has been an instrumental partner and supporter of Impact Melanoma.  She raises awareness and volunteers to educate teenagers about the risk of sun and tanning beds. Meghan emailed us to tell us about the spots on Team Running for Cover.

IM: What made you decide to get involved and commit to a spot on the team? What does said spot mean to you?

Forrest: At one of Meghan’s volunteer efforts, The Boston Globe interviewed her “My life is forever changed,” she told the Globe, going on to tell students that her body was disfigured by surgery in 2011 to remove a cancerous mole on her left calf and the removal of six lymph nodes. The full article can be found here.

Seeing Meghan’s commitment to the cause really motivated us to get involved and showed us that no matter how hard training might be, if we are able to help raise awareness and funds so others will not have to endure what Meghan did it would be worth it.

IM: How many marathons have you run in the past? What do you take away from these experiences?

Forrest: For Adam this will be his 4 (running Chicago twice and NYC once) and for Lindsay this will be her third also running Chicago and NYC.  This will be the first marathon for both since getting married and having 4 daughters together. Having our daughters watch the dedication and commitment it takes to challenge your body and educate them on the importance of skin protection is amazing in itself.

IM: I know it’s hard to predict, but how do you think this particular run will stack up (from a philosophical/humanitarian/or just straight physical point of view?

Forrest: Being from Boston and attending the Boston marathon every year to cheer on friends and strangers will make this a special run for sure.  Plus the fact that we are supporting Meghan and a great cause make it a surreal feeling.  Crossing that finish line on Boylston after being cheered on by friends, family and complete total strangers for 26.1 miles makes this one of the most amazing accomplishments.

IM: What is your personal stance / battle cry with regard to skin cancer and taking care of one’s skin?

Forrest: You only have one chance with skin –you don’t get another shot at it.  You need to take care of it, use sunscreen and cover up, go to the dermatologist and be proactive with your skin.

IM: What’s your pre-race ritual? Some sort of specific cuisine the night before? Specific stretching routine? Special socks? You tell us!

Forrest: Pre-race rituals start will a nice pasta dinner and some good stretching.  We like to get up with plenty of time in the morning to stretch get ready eat some toast with peanut butter and a banana and have a small amount of coffee for a kick start.  But our most important routine is post race… a few well-deserved beers to celebrate the race and the people that matter most!
