Good Fortune: Forging a Partnership with Lucky 13’s

As we prepare to welcome in 2022, we thought we’d take a moment to reflect on a major piece of our efforts in 2021, which was to bring more tattoo artists into the know regarding proper skincare, and, given how close they come to their clients’ skin, it made perfect sense to engage these artisans in our Skinny on Skin program. The SOS training aims to educate health and skin professionals to recognize suspicious lesions on their clients’ skin and encourage their clients to seek medical care as needed from a dermatologist or other health professional for an official diagnosis.

We’re feeling very fortunate to have partnered with Medford-based company Lucky 13’s to help spread the word of IMPACT Melanoma. They, in their own way, are producing skin balm products to aid in the proper care for tattoo preservation, which is the perfect avenue to incorporate UV protectant to maximize holistic skincare.

We particularly appreciate this segment of a recent blog post they wrote on their site entitled, “The Best All-Natural Tattoo Aftercare Tips and Suggestions.”

It reads:

HAVE A VAMPIRE’S MENTALITY

Most tattoo lovers prefer getting their tats towards the beginning of summer to show them off into the warm season. At Lucky 13’s tattoo, we advise our clients that tattoos and sunlight do not “weather.” Rather than exposing your newly acquired tattoo when going out, try covering it for a considerable amount of time until it fully heals. Moreover, tattoos are there to stay for a long time. You still have a lot of summers to show off your ink!

We’ve long been preaching the “pale is the new tan” mentality, and, hey, adding a vampire element to that dialogue makes sense, right? They also speak openly about the importance of utilizing SPF in their posts as well. Check them out!

Anyhow, Lucky 13’s is a great partner and has graciously incorporated a page dedicated to IMPACT Melanoma and its stance as a community advocate right here. It even features our spotlight on tattoo artist, Igor Mortis.

In conversation, Lucky 13’s had this to say:

“Our goal is to educate and empower people to protect their “canvas” for their tattoos. Your skin attracts the sun at a greater rate when it has ink in it, and your tattoo artist knows your skin extremely closely. We are developing all-natural moisturizers and balms to help protect your skin and will be launching our own all-natural sunscreen this year specifically designed to help protect tattoo’d skin and prevent damage to our ocean/beaches/reefs.

We are extremely excited to begin producing content and educating tattoo artists across the world to detect the signs of melanoma on their clients’ skin as they are working and hope to create a more open conversation about skincare and protection especially in tattoo parlors.”

Why did you get involved with IMPACT initially? How’d you find us?

Our office is in the area, and we have seen the brand before. We’re basically neighbors and are ecstatic to have forged this bond.

What do you hope to accomplish with your sponsorship of the Skinny on Skin program?

We hope to educate artists and tattoo enthusiasts to detect early signs of melanoma.

Do you have any specific stats speaking to skin attracting more sun when you have ink?

Not yet! But we’re pleased to make note that we are involved in conducting these very studies.

What do you appreciate about an organization like IMPACT existing and what excites you about being partnered with us?

We appreciate their focus on EDUCATION and EARLY detection, and we aim to help spread that gospel. Together we’re going to make a great impact in the new year. We’re excited.
